How It Works

work

The Neptune Windvane works on a horizontal axis, servo-pendulum system, which is the most efficient form of self steering, using the vessel’s existing steering system to steer the boat, together with the Neptune’s own rudder, thereby increasing total rudder volume.

The Neptune is simple to operate. It connects to the vessel’s steering system by lines which link it to the vessel’s main wheel or tiller. On leaving port, set sails and course, rotate the course adjusting crank on the Neptune until the airfoil is standing vertical in the wind’s slip stream. At this point, secure the lines to the tiller or wheel. The Neptune takes over leaving you free to plot your course, tune your sails, make a cup of tea, relax and enjoy sailing!

The advantage of the Neptune over other systems is that it incorporates a horizontal axis airfoil, which is linked to the Neptune’s rudder, which, in turn is linked to the vessel’s main rudder. When the wind shifts, or if the boat moves slightly off-course, the airfoil movement is considerably greater than the relative wind shift or course alteration, making the system highly sensitive. As the Neptune rudder attempts to correct the course, the immense sideways load is transmitted to the ship’s main rudder, so both rudders work together to steer the vessel.
